International Training Institutes in Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™)
International Training Institutes in Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) are open to music therapists, allied professionals, and students who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) and utilizing NMT™ methodology and techniques within their scope of practice.
NMT™ is delivered exclusively by NMT™ Professionals who have completed training through the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®. To ensure best practices, protect the public, and maintain the integrity of the NMT™ system, all training participants will sign a license agreement with the Academy, renewable every five years, to use the NMT™ designation and techniques. This designation is renewable through the completion of 50 Professional Development credits.

Learning Objectives
- Participants will gain a working knowledge of the Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT)™ System of Techniques through active practice and live demonstration.
- Participants will demonstrate an increased knowledge of current research supporting NMT™ techniques through active translation into therapeutic music exercises;
- Participants will demonstrate a working knowledge of the Transformational Design Model (TDM)™ by working through clinical scenarios and presenting their projected clinical outcomes;
- Participants will identify current clinical assessments that can be used by NMT™ Professionals for treatment evaluation of functional motor, cognitive, speech/language, and psychosocial outcomes;
- Participants will be able to answer basic neuroanatomy and neuropathology questions related to a variety of neurologic disorders.
Upon Completion
- Upon successful completion of this course and a written test, a certificate of completion in advanced Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT)™ training will be issued by the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®.
- Successful completion of the NMT™ training and professional affiliation license requirements allows one to practice the NMT™ System of Techniques and use the professional designation assigned for five years. This designation is renewable through the completion of 50 Professional Development credits. Your professional affiliation status is dependent on several factors (see Affiliation Categories)
- This training is open to other students and professionals outside of the field of music therapy, however, completion of the NMT™ training does NOT allow one to practice outside their professional licensure-training-certification.
- There are no required prerequisites to take this training.
Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy® License and Professional Affiliation Program
To uphold and maintain best practices of the Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) system of standardized techniques, safeguard both the consumers of NMT™ and the public at large, and to preserve and protect the integrity of NMT™ for future generations, participants will sign a license agreement with the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy® allowing one to practice the NMT™ System of Techniques and use the professional designation assigned for five years. This International Training Program of the Academy is endorsed by:
- World Federation of Neurologic Rehabilitation (WFNR)
- European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (EFNS)
- International Society for Clinical Neuromusicology (CNM)
- Training is also approved by the U.S. Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) as advanced provider for Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE) credits [The Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy™, #P-105, maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria]. The 36-hour Institute will provide the board-certified music therapist with 38 CMTE credits that can be applied towards recertification. Your certificate of completion can be submitted as proof of your attendance and participation. Completion of this course does not ensure that the participant is currently a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Verify music therapy board certification status at http://www.cbmt.org.

Can students enroll in the NMT™ Training?
Starting in 2026, students who complete the training during their undergraduate or graduate music therapy program, prior to board certification or completion of their training as a music therapist, will need to complete an NMT™ Clinical Practice Workshop or NMT™ Academy approved internship to receive their NMT™ designation. Once the NMT™ Student completes their training as a music therapist, they can register for a Clinical Practice Workshop at a discounted rate.
What can I expect before the training? Are there any pre-course materials?

I cannot attend the entire training. Can I still register and receive the certificate of completion?
How many CMTE credits can I receive?

What resources do I need at home in order to attend the virtual training?
Each attendee will receive a link along with a secure password to enter the training each day. You will need to have access to a computer with internet access, a quiet place to concentrate, and a keyboard/piano to practice some of the concepts as they are being taught. In addition, there are many opportunities where participants break into small groups and practice the concepts being taught. Please attend the training in a location where you can unmute and participate. It is helpful, but not necessary, to have any additional musical resources such as Orff or percussion instruments, a guitar, autoharp, or wind instruments (such as harmonicas, recorders, melodicas) available.
Can I retake this training?
Retake Registration is available to individuals who have previously completed the NMT™ Training. If you’re registering as a retake, please email your previous certificate or proof of completion to nmt@nmtacademy.co.
Where can I find pricing details?
What’s the difference between the registration types?
- Professional Registration is for practicing professionals (e.g., board-certified music therapists, physical therapists, etc.).
- Student Registration is for those currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD academic program (BA/BM students must be in their 3rd or 4th year).
- Retake Registration is available to individuals who have previously completed the NMT™ Training. If you’re registering as a retake, please email your previous certificate or proof of completion to nmt@nmtacademy.co.
