International Training Institutes in NMT

This training is open to all professionals who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) and music therapists interested in utilizing NMT methodology and techniques.

Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)® is a research-guided clinical system that is driven by advances in neuroscience and the understanding of the perception, cognition, and production of music and how music can influence and change non-musical brain and behavior function.

Neurologic Music Therapy is defined as the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor function due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system. Neurologic Music Therapy is evidence-based. Its treatment techniques are based on the scientific knowledge in music perception and production and the effects thereof on non-musical brain and behavior functions. Populations served by Neurologic Music Therapists include, but are not limited to: stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and other neurological diseases affecting cognition, movement, and communication (e.g., MS, Muscular Dystrophy, etc). This 4-day, 30-hour workshop will provide therapists with advanced clinical training and scientific knowledge in the field of NMT.

Curriculum

Upon successful completion of this course and a written exam, a certificate of completion in advanced Neurologic Music Therapy training will be issued by the Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy. Completion of the NMT training allows the board-certified music therapist to practice and use the designation of Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT) for five years. This training is open to students and professionals outside of the field of music therapy, however, completion of the NMT training does NOT allow one to practice outside their professional licensure-training certification. There are no required prerequisites to take this training. Completion of the training in its entirety is expected to gain the NMT designation and certificate.  The NMT Academy training is endorsed by the World Federation of Neurorehabilitation (WFNR), the European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (EFNS), and the International Society for Clinical Neuromusicology (CNM). The NMT Academy is approved by the U.S. Certification Board of Music Therapy (CBMT) as an advanced provider for Continuing Music Therapy Education credits (CMTE). Successful course completion will result in 36 CMTE credits.

Due to COVID, this training has been made accessible via an online format when specified. We realize that this change will require participants to have the resources at home to participate.  Each attendee will receive a link along with a secure password to enter the training each day.  You will need to have access to a computer with internet access, a quiet place to concentrate, and ideally a keyboard/piano to practice some of the concepts as they are being taught.  In addition, during the face to face training, there are many opportunities for the participants to break into small groups and practice the concepts being taught. This will still be possible, and during these breakout sessions, it would be helpful but not necessary if you can have any additional musical resources such as Orff or percussion instruments, a guitar, autoharp, or wind instruments (such as harmonicas, recorders, melodicas) available.

While this intensive training was created to introduce basic introductory knowledge about neurologic music therapy (NMT), all of the content may be difficult for some to absorb within the 4 day training period. Therefore, anyone who has completed this initial training and remains in good standing in the Academy is welcome to retake the training at any time for a discounted fee.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Be able to demonstrate a basic definition and introductory knowledge about neurologic music therapy (NMT), including the taxonomy of techniques used in NMT;
  • Demonstrate an increased knowledge of current research supporting NMT techniques;
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Transformational Design Model; a model to assist in treatment selection based on functional goals;
  • Identify current clinical assessments that can be used by NMT’s for treatment evaluation
  • Be able to answer basic neuroanatomy and pathology questions related to a variety of neurologic disorders.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

An electronic copy of the required training manual is covered under your registration fee. It will be essential to have this with you during the training. Three weeks prior to the training you will receive a final schedule of lectures as well as a link to the training materials. Typically, there will be around 4 hours of work to complete prior to the start of the Training.

A certificate of completion will be provided by e-mail at the end of the training.  Your certificate of completion can be submitted to CBMT as proof of your attendance and participation.  Please note that you must attend the training in its entirety and successfully complete the final test to receive your certificate.  Random attendance checks will be done throughout the training and all participants are required to keep their video on.
